Vinegar works the best. Use a 1/4 cup of laundry detergent and about a cup of vinegar. The vinegar gets the odor out and softens the nappies. The more laundry detergent the less they will actually be clean.
I use cloth nappies on my daughter and I have tried tons of different products. You can't beat vinegar!

Back home cloth nappies are used by a vast majority of people , as it works out cheaper in the long run. therefore there are quite a few nappy cleaning stuff ,which work very well. One is called sterinappy, and is used by soaking the rinsed nappies in a bucket which seals(so no babies play in it and drown) . the nappies are kept soaking overnight and then rinsed. other methods used are washing them with the green bar of sunlight soap--not the same as bathing with. they are then left in the sun and rewashed. lots of work but come out really white.
Some people ,just wash with an unharmful soap powder and the bleach them once in a while to remain white. obviously rinsing well after.
so i would say that perhaps you could order something like that (Sterinappy) from the net. i know there is a South African shop in London ,which apparently stocks many of our favourite items, and if there are any people here who use nappies they will be buying it there. if not perhaps you can enquire whether they will be interested in carrying it in their stock.

Cleaning Cloth Diapers With Natural Choice's Oxy-Boost
What Is Oxy-Boost?
Oxy-Boost is sodium percarbonate, a solid form of hydrogen peroxide bonded with natural soda ash. It is activated by water where it releases oxygen which provides cleaning and effective stain removal.
Why Use Oxy-Boost?
Almost as important as the decision to use cloth diapers or other natural fiber garments should be the decision of what you use to clean them.
Please consider the following --
Detergents:
Many commercial products do clean effectively but will leave behind unwanted fragrances and other residues. In addition, detergent alone may not always completely clean heavily stained diapers. Natural soaps are a safer choice but they are no better than commercial products in removing tough stains on diapers and may also reduce the absorbency of the cloth.
Chlorine Bleach:
Chlorine bleach will break down any natural fiber, cause fading and discoloration. Chlorine bleach can produce small amounts of dioxin which is a well known carcinogen. Also chlorine bleach tends to cover up stains instead of totally removing them.
Borax:
Borax is a natural mineral often recommended as a whitening agent for cottons. While effective to some degree, Borax is not a true bleaching agent and is very limited in effectiveness on really tough stains.
Oxy-Boost:
Oxy-Boost is a versatile oxygen based bleach. It is color-safe, fabric-safe, user-safe, and is an excellent deodorizer. Oxy-Boost is safe at all temperatures, on all washable fabrics (except silk or wool), and all colors in soft or hard water, and is compatible with household detergents and cleaners.
Oxy-Boost will not hurt people, plants, children or animals. It is biodegradable leaving no harmful residues on the article cleaned or in the environment.
Oxy-Boost will remove the toughest organic stains and unlike chlorine bleach, which can merely cover up a stain, Oxy-Boost attacks and breaks down stains to totally remove them from the garment. It also sanitizes the fabric.
Like all Natural Choices' products, Oxy-Boost contains no fragrances or unnecessary fillers.
Instructions For Use:
To destain, whiten and deodorize cloth diapers, first run diapers through a pre-wash to remove urine and other matter.
In hot water, add 4-6 oz. of Oxy-Boost in washer with detergent (use Natural Choices' Oxy-Prime Detergent for best results), soak at least 60 minutes or overnight; finish wash cycle in the same water.
Consider using Natural Choices' Safe 'N Soft Fabric Softener when laundering cloth diapers, which will not reduce the absorbency of the diapers unlike many other fabric softeners containing tallow.

I order mine on line since I cant seem to find it at any store. I order from drugstore.com. It is called Bi-O-Kleen Premium Plus All Temperature Laundry Powder with Enzymes. It costs about $10 for 5 pounds of detergent, but it lasts forever. It only takes about a half a scoop to clean a load of diapers so I get about 100 loads out of a box. The dipaers always come out smelling clean and fresh. I dont use anything else.

I use PHP's nappy soak - you can buy it online from various sites- I got mine from thebabycatalogue.com. It's antibacerial and eco-friendly. I heard tea tree oil was good too, though haven't tried it myself. If there's still some staining after washing, hang them outside on a sunny day - bright sunlight works wonders!

I used to soak my cloth nappies in a bucket of tea tree oil (3-4 drops a bucket) and it was much better than any nasty chemical stuff. Then I'd wash them in non-bio.
This place is good: http://www.phpbaby.com/
