COIN COLLECTING !!! This is something that makes them aware of coins and currency from all over the world. I started when I was approx. 11 years old and have been ever since.
Of course if the subject does not interest the kid then why bother. But if you know there could be an interest it is something friends and family can add to for Christmas and birthday gifts over the years as well.
Good Luck !!

Go to a Hobie store and let them pick out what they are interested in. One idea is mod ale trains, you can build ever thing for the engine and cars to th town and landscaping from starch. And you could even look at garage sales, thrift stores. This is a hobby that they can do at any age, they can start and stop at any age and then go back to it years later. And even pass it on to there kids in 20 or more years form now. Trains are for boys and girls and all ages my kids range from 15 to 3 months old. And my dad who is 66 still does mod ale trains, it is also a stress reliever.

Stamp collecting is pretty fun. You can either collect U.S. or foreign stamps. All you need to stat out is a collection book (around $35 for a good one) and stamps! Sometimes in the sunday paper there are free stamp offers in the coupon books.
