Here are some possibilities:
- Bios configuration has turned off your ATA hard drive ports
- Ribbon cable has gone bad; try another ribbon
- IDE controller on the motherboard is fried

I recommend against just swapping Windows Xp drives from one system to another, unless the systems are identical. You could wreck the balance of drivers when you do this. Thank goodness that it did not boot up.

Use the original Dell installation disk
you put the disk in the CD drive before firing up your PC and it will do the rest

well, make sure u dont have a floppy inside the computer or u may also want to try on the BIOS.
Make it first check for the hard drive, then some other devices.
Make your Hard drive the primary resource for an OS.

Enter setup and check for it in BIOS. It may not be seen. It also may not be compatible with your existing BIOS depending on how old the computer and how large the drive is.
