I am thinking of going to Cancun for my vacation in january with my son who is 2. 5 years old. I just wanted to ask you opinion. I always had this idea that perhaps Mexico is not a safe place to go to?
Is it safe for me to go there alone with a young child?
have you ever been there.
What would be the best affordable alternative?

My daughter and I went to Cancun - well actually, we stayed south of Cancun nearer Play Del Carmen, we even rented a car and drove to Chitzenitsa?? We found the Mexicans there to be VERY freindly and never once did we feel scared or threatened. So much so did I enjoy the trip that the next year and the next after that, my husband and I went - found the saem every time and tried different resorts each time as well.
Go and have fun!! But pick a resort for families so you have other people with small children to hang with.

going to Cancun is not problem, at this moment Oaxaca and Mexico city has problems with political group.
In every place either in Mexico or a big city, do not carry too much cash, keep your passport and credit cards in safe in a hotel, just take one and enough money.
Do not leave your child alone
