saline conditions? Do not wear your jewelery when you swim, cook, whatever it is that causes said conditions. Keep a plain, basic liquid jewelry cleaner handy (you can get it at any wal-mart, wal-greens, grocery, wherever). Put pieces away in a jewelry box when not wearing them. Do not heat them, or put them in anything acidic, like lemon juice. A soft toothbrush is awesome for scrubbing away stuck-on grime. Buy a generic polishing cloth, and gently wipe away surface smudges and dirt.

Keep your artificial jewellery wrapped in thin tissue and in individual plastic pouches, away from anything abrasive.
Buff gently with microfibre cloths, occasionally after wearing and storing again.

Silver just needs to be washed in lemon juice and soda bicarbonate (rinse in cold water afterwards). And store wrapped in tissue or cloth, placed in ziplock bags.

Gold fares better; all you need to do is just wash it in a mild water and liquid soap solution, rinse it and dry it.

NEVER wash pearls, and NEVER wet turquoises.
