There are several types of hamsters, regular golden are probably the cheapest and may only cost 2 dollars or so, Teddy Bears are usually a little more expensive, and some color varieties are even more. Dwarf Hamsters are usually about three or four dollars but are not so good as pets as they bite more frequently. Remember that hamsters are very solitary animals and are best if you keep only one in a cage....so a pair of hamsters would fight almost constantly....and the male is usually the loser. Gerbils are a better pet than a hamster, easier to take care of, alert and active animals and usually cost about the same as hamsters, Gerbils are also more odor-free. Guinea Pigs require lots of care and their constant noise becomes annoying...the sound of a refrigerator door will start them off...they have associated the sound with fresh foods.
