Malcolm Arnold, who died a week ago, wrote nine symphonies, and a whole host of film music, including the Oscar-winning "Bridge over the river Kwai". His style is controversial, and often ironic. But not a squeak from anyone as yet on this site. Your serious comments will be appreciated.

There was a poem dedicated to him by E J Thribb in Private Eye the other day. Not terribly informative, but it did at least note the occasion.

I don't know the film or any of his other stuff, not at least by name. But I do find that modern music often makes 100% sense when attached to visuals, and no sense at all when standing alone. To me, that is. Just a thought. Don't diss it, it's the only one I've got. Sorry...

All I've heard of his was the music from BOTWK, which I've seen several times, most recently on the big screen. I did enjoy the music in that film (which I think he wrote in 10 days), so if it's typical of his work then I would probably like to hear more.

RIP.

Radio 4 had a long section of their Obit program about him - you could try looking at their website...

I haven't heard enough of his music to have a strong opinion, but now that I know that he's dead I'll be sure to listen to more of it.
