When I did mine, (MSc) it was lots of research. You will be allocated a dissertation supervisor, that you need to keep close contact with.
The length of the dissertation will vary from one uni to another. Mine was 12,000 to 15,000 words +/- 10%
I have not heard of anyone having to do a vivo voce exam at masters level, this is normally PhD level. (Defend your thesis).
You will need to write the dissertation to the correct level. This is not something you can teach someone, you will pick it up from comments when you submit course work during the taught side of the course.
You will be told the required format by your supervisor. but it is usually:
Title page
Contents
Acknowledgements
Abstract
Introduction
Literature Review
Methodology
Data Collection and Analysis
Results and Recommendations
Conclusions
Appendix
Bibliography

It depends on the university and program. In order to get my degree, I had to perform an original research thesis and defend it in front of my committee members. The thesis had to meet certain guidelines and written with literature review. If you have not started the program yet, the thesis will take your entire second year to complete. Good luck!
