i have azalea plants which were installed in Spring 06 and they look pretty rough. Do I need to mulch a lot or not? Should they be trimmed?

azaleas have to be pruned at just the right time as you don't want them to set buds and then whack back......deep mulching for the winter is the best thing to do...(pine needles....anything acidic)

With azalea plants, if you live in an area where the temperature drops below freezing, more mulch is always the better option. It's difficult to get too much mulch. It's best to wait until after they bloom again in the spring before you trim them back; that will help them to remain compact and healthy for future years.

The best time to trim your azalea bushes is in the spring right after they bloom out. However you can trim some of the leggy parts now not as a way to winterize but so they can come back fuller next year.

I like to cut them back to about 8 or 10" and probably not needed but I always like to put(apply) a good mulch around the base of the plant

lets deal with why they look rough.they need part shade and dont do well in full sun.also well drained acidic soil will have them thriving.have you fertilized them with miracle grow or similar product?its easy to "burn them.try using and organic fertilizer and mulch with pine needles.come spring,prune any dead or damaged limbs and add some manure,peat moss,and bark mulch.prune the tip of each branch after flowering.good luck ,i think everything will work out fine
