Because leaves fall to earth and die in Autumn..The Leafs wait ungtil Spring when the golf courses open to throw themselves to the ground..Besides, Toronto Maple Losers wouldn't sell as much merch..

it could be that their complete call is a few thing like the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey club yet, in any journey, the crew is called for Canada's nationwide sort, the Maple Leaf, being renamed in 1927 even as offered through Conn Smythe, who were a member of the Maple Leaf Regiment throughout WWI. (The Leafs began off because the Arenas in 1917, renamed the St Patricks in 1919.)

Not a bad Question....and it is difficult to explain if one does not understand grammer.
It is because the "Leaf" is not pluralized....the team name is...get it?....
they are referring to more than member, not more than one leaf.
for instance....they used to play at Maple Leaf Gardens....not Maple Leafs Gardens. Or, The team is owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment ltd...not maple leafs sports...
it is common to add an "s" at the end of team names. Someone earlier mentioned the flyers....same idea...
pick up a canadian press handbook and it will be explained on a much more technical level...

It is called "The Toronto Maple Leafs", not Leaves, because in the war, there was an elite group of Canadian soldiers called the "Leafs" not leaves, for some odd reason. Thus, the team name is based on the elite soldiers, not the leaves themselves. It is to represent how hardcore they are.

Because "Leaf" isn't the word being pluralized, that's why it's not Leaves.
The team used to play at Maple Leaf Gardens, it's owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainmant. "Maple Leaf" as a whole is being pluralized.
