This is ridiculous. I know many short people who have black belts in karate, or are police officers who can defend themselves quite well.....

I've seen a lot of short guys that can throw down. Height does not have "everything" to do with the ability to defend ones self.

You obviously have had no training in martial arts. In Jiu Jitsu for example the taller the other person is, the easier it is to throw them (hip or shoulder throw).
My head instructor (Shihan) is about 5 feet high, and I would never want to see him have to defend himself. He could take apart anyone no matter how tall they are. Plus his stature gives him an advantage. He can hit them lower and faster before they have a chance to react.
It's not what you have, it's how you use it.
