Hi,

I'm sort of a moron when it comes to computers, so please forgive me if this is a really basic question and/or outrageously impossible scenario.

I live in an apartment building, where I do not trust my neighbours. I have a LAN connection. I have been having problems with my phone (it's on a splitter with a filter.), sounding super fuzzy & sometimes not ringing at my end when people phone. Today the power in my apartment went out suddenly. When I knocked on the landlord's door to have it fixed, he was on a laptop (I'm sure he didn't have one before).

What I'm asking is, if it's possible, with some knowledge of cables/computers, could somebody else's internet connection be running through mine? Would that explain phone problems?

And IF this is possible, are files on my computer safe? Could the other person have access to my online information?

If anyone out there knows anything about this sort of thing, some help would REALLY be appreciated!! Thanks so much!!

If you are hooked up directly to your cable or DSL modem then you shouldn't have a problem. If you have a wireless connection then yes they can use your connection unless you have a password set for security. Meaning, they have to know your code to access the connection and as always, make sure you have a firewall and anti virus protection up to date and running.

With the information provided, I think you are ok. It sounds like you have a PC connected via ethernet to a DSL modem connection. Your PC has a unique user id and password installed that is used with the DSL connection. As such, your neigbors should not be able to tap into your connection. If you do not have a dedicated DSL connection or any sort of router installed, then you need to explain your setup more effectively in order to evaluate your security vulnerability.

the only way someone could access a LAN is if they took of the LAN cables and plugged it into theres. If it was just a typical internet line, then no. Check "My Network Places" frequently for unknown computers that may be using it.

If you are using a dial up connection the only way someone else could get online using your Internet connection would be if they had your user id and your pass word.

They would have to have to have both your id and pass word to use your connection they wouldn't need to have your phone line to do it though.

Let me see if i can explain it you could take your computer to your friends house and use that phone line to access your internet or for that matter you could use her computer and access your internet using your user id and pass word.

The way the connection works is using your id and pass word not the connection itself

I don't think so...

Lot's of factors that could fail with those attempts unless you are in wireless..

1. In order to connect to the internet you need a modem and he needs to know the username and password of your internet account.
2. If he uses the LAN cable he needs to know the wires that is used for the connection there are eith wires and 4 of em are active he will never know unless he goes to your house and looks for it in there...
