if christianity is not a religion then somebody from the i.r.s. needs to look into the matter

Yes, It is both. But there are many Christians that don't have a relationship with God. Many people grew up going to church or their parents were a certain religion. If you were to have them fill out a survey asking wither they were Muslim, Christian, Catholic, pagan, Budist, and so on, you can see how they would just pick the one that their family most related to.
However if you know you are a sinner and realise that there is nothing you can do to be forgiven and to cleanse yourself from your sin, and you cry out to Jesus to save you, you will know the peace that comes from having faith in Jesus power to forgive sin.
Then you will know that you are a child of God through Jesus, and that your Heavenly Father will hear your prayers. You will not just know about Him you will know Him. And you will be comfortible knowing the He knows you too.

I think that those who don't know God personally will probably say it is a "religion". Those who know Him and love Him, will say it is a personal relationship.

Compare it to marriage. Those who are in an unhappy or superficial relationship will call it an "institution" or a "trap"... while those who know about working things out and the give and take of a relationship will call it just that.

I think Christianity is a personal relationship with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A moment by moment communication with the best friend we could ever have. He shed His blood because He loved us so we could dwell with Him forever. Not just in Heaven but here on earth-by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who comes to live in us when we admit we are sinners and ask Christ to forgive us. Many attend church but never give their life to Jesus. They are not Christian. A Pastor once told me, I could set in my garage all night and that won't make me a Volkswagen or I could spend a day a week at McDonalds that won't make me a Big Mac! Church is important so we can uplift one another but Christianity is our personal relationship with Almighty God, I believe.
