I can answer you questions, but let me ask you one. Your statement that your parents 'no' little math...are you using a shortcut or do you not KNOW that no is an incorrect spelling and should be KNOW.

Now, there a a couple of ways to do both your problems. One is to think of -b as -1b, so here goes.

I do not have an absolute value symbol on my keyboard, so I'll just type in the words.

The absolute value of 2 -(-1b)=6 remove (), and you know that the absolute value of 2 is 2, so you get
2 +1b=6 subtract 2 from both sides
1b=4

-1b=8 divide (or multiply) both sides by -1
1b=-8

1) You have |2| + b = 6 (assuming I'm interpreting what you typed correctly).

Since |2| = 2, you have b = 6 - |2| = 4.

If you really meant 121-(-b)=6, then you have 121+b=6, so b=6-121=-115.

Please don't use | when you really mean 1.

2) The question, as you've typed it, is strange. You're saying -b = 8, and asking what -b is? -b = 8. If you're asking what b is, you negate both sides of this equation and get -(-b) = -8, which simplifies to b=8.

before you start working on your math, maybe you should check your spelling.

1) 121-(-b)=6
two negatives equals a positive, so 121+b= 6. to get be on one side by itself, subtract 121 from both sides. you can get it from there.

2) do you really need help on this one? the answer's right there for you!
