do you believe that the laws need to be changed and if so how?

In my experience paedophiles are rarely unable to change sufficiently to be safe living within the community. Yet time and time again they are released after serving their sentence, only to go and commit further crimes.

Evidence suggests that paedophiles, in order to satisfy their own needs, need to keep increasing the violence used, and to increase the level of degradation inflicted on their victim.

How many of these men/women are we living amongst on a daily basis. The current levels of monitoring are insufficent allowing relative freedom and almost complete anonymity.

Yes, the laws need to be changed. Once convicted, they should be executed because they are of Satan - EVIL. Those who have been molested know exactly what I mean. You never, ever forget what has been done to you. Pedophiles never get better and never change. It is beyond me why they are ever allowed to be free once they are behind bars - Grrrrrrrr.

I am grateful for one respondent Musicon who provides some sense of rational thought in relation to this "debate". Your "evidence" if it is such should be quoted as sourced rather than relying on any media source that will routinely fan the fear. As far as I am aware there is inadequate research into this area and as a result perhaps inadequate responsive legislation. Some research suggests that levels of paedophile activity has remained constant over 100 years howvever, detection rates have improved but moreover the public fear and panic that surroudns it makes it appear out of control. Of course the Internet has helped to make it easier for some people who may wish to look and I am fully conversant with arguments pertaining to slipery slopes etc. and yet there is no evidence that looking at an adolescent will lead to violent crime. It is unhelpful as the media and even police do - to label all offenders paedophiles - those working in the field of protection and rehabilitation do not as it is a specific term applied to a certain type of offender. In short there is no evidence to suggest that increased violence occurs...current monitoring despite what tabloid papers would have you believe is widely very effectve and much more so than mob rule - think of the child doctor a paedatrician burnt out of her home after the News of teh World named and shamed her...if you want change you should first argue for the ISPs such as Yahoo and search engines like Google to stop allowing access to the sites allowing resources to be focused more on those involved in frotn line abuse.

Take a breath. Stop panicking. Question the media hype. And check facts do not rely on the initial knee jerk reaction of hang 'em and shoot 'em. And by the way check with the likes of Lucy Faitful Foundation and others and you will see that rehabilitation does work.

Yes something MUST be done about this and soon. These sick minded people should not be allowed back into society and that's all there is to it, no excuses. They should be left on a desert island somewhere in the middle of nowhere without any food or water and simply be left to die. There should not be a place in society for these people. The government have got to start realising this, as time and time again it has been proved that they re-offend. This cannot go on any longer. It seems that if you forget to pay your TV licence or park on a double yellow line, your punishment is greater than that of a paedophile - why should this be? Today yet another story proving this is in all the newspapers. A young foreign student on a gap year from uni, comes over to Glasgow and lives in a church - the one place that she probably felt totally safe in. She's now been discovered buried beneath the church due to this sick man who was yet again let into society to work in a church????? This is so, so wrong yet i'm sure there will be many more incidents like this still to come. The government has got to do something soon.

I totally agree. I am in contact with Police, Social Workers and Support Workers every day and anyone I have asked have always stated that there is, and I do not like using this phrase, 'NO CURE'
If society is going to lock them up, then do so for life. Maybe if this would happen, the public would accept this as the best of a load of bad options.
We are too interested in why these crimes are committed. When our children are not safe, reasons don't matter! Do away with the problem!!

I think that for repeat offenders like that, they need to lock them up and throw away the key. I doubt very seriously if they can be rehabilitated and in most cases, prisons aren't places in which rehabilitation can take place.
Example: Sex offenders are supposed to register when they move from place to place but a great many of them fall through the cracks and fail to do so. The system needs to be fixed badly and when it falls on the public at large to help keep track of these offenders, then something is wrong...terribly wrong.

Of course the laws need to be changed to address the issue of pedophiles. They cannot be rehabilitated and we cannot afford to allow another innocent child to suffer at the hands of these evil people. The liberal left is tying up the bill in Congress once again so that more children will be murdered and more families will be torn apart by grief. We are surrounded by pedophiles in our communities across America. Convicted pedophiles should face a minimum sentence of at least 25 years. REMEMBER when you vote in November that the Democrats are preventing Jessica's Law and other measures to protect our children from being instated. The American citizen must stand up for the safety of our precious children.

I do agree that things need to change. You are correct that it's been proved that the cannot change. Released from prison and given the chance, they will re-offend. In the case of pedophiles I think they should be locked up and the key should be thrown away. Their victims have to live with the results of the crime for the rest of their lives. Their abusers should suffer the same fate.

Here is my view on this topic. I truly do not feel that people should go to jail or prison for Marijuana crime. Well what our government says is a crime. I have never used but from all the info I get from hubby I do know that people who do Marijuana alone are harmless. If we let these people out of our prisons we would have room to hold the pedophiles for life. I wish they would just execute them all but I know that will not happen. It is sad when you can get more time in prison for dealing dope then you can for raping a child. What is wrong with this world that this can be true?

The laws have always been there, and they are more than adequate for the purposes of legal process.

You mention "evidence" but do not quote the source or reliability of that evidence, which in all probability is the "News of the World" or some other example of third-rate journalism.

In absolute terms, I would suggest that most paedophiles are a lot less dangerous than drug dealers or drunk-drivers, yet the hysteria is a bit like the fear of an escaped lion. No-one ever sees it, or knows where it might be, but no-one ventures out just in case.

Thank heavens we have a judiciary who distance themselves from the "mob rule" mentality.

I believe the laws should be changed, to allow the death penalty! I know it will never happen, but realistically, it works in other countries, and these freaks would be less likely to crawl out from under their stones if they thought they might end up dead, rather than living in a really luxury "rehab" unit for a few years, and then let back out to terrorise even more kids. I think the only way to cure them is death...whilst they're alive and in rehab, they are still thinking about what they want to do to kids, and that is a crime in itself.

What worries me more than anything, as the mother of two boys, is what on earth did their parents do to create such monsters, and how the hell can I ensure I don't create monsters either?

It's a topic that sadly could be discussed forever, and as long as we sit here talking about it, they're out doing whatever they're doing to get their kicks...which will be involving somebody's child.

I believe the laws need to be changed, where I live there is one about 4 doors down from me. About 500yds away is a school. This disabled man continually is rude to me and when I shouted back you are a dirty evil man he looked shocked. His "secret " was out, I was visited by the Police less than 4 hrs after that incident and told to keep the peace. He has Police protection and I dont think thats fair, the elderly people round here think hes lovely, and dont believe he is one, but I know better as I was told the fact by a Mum and her girl who was approached by this man. This dirty man did a dirty deed to his own daughter!!! and I get told by Police to tone it down
