Ignorance is defined as a lack of knowledge, and the state of being unaware or uninformed. People often say that a lack of education is what causes ignorance...but is this really true? After all, some of the most educated and smartest people in the world, would be what I would term ignorant. For instance, Hitler. Hitler was by no means dumb as far as political and war strategy; however, he was believed that anyone that didn't look a certain way was impure and did not deserve to exist. Was that not a sign of ignorance? Can an educated person can still be an ignorant one? I probably won't get many responses to this...but it's worth a try. :)

Your right, I call these people, intellectually stupid. When a person relies only on intelligence, they become removed from common sense and wisdom. Intelligence without wisdom is ignorance of truth. Basically, education without morals or ethics is ignorance.

I absolutely think that an educated person can be ignorant. Actually some of the most educated people I know are the most ignorant I know as well. On the same token, some of the most uneducated people I know are the most open minded, optomistic, and well informed people I know.
I think it just depends on the person. Education doesn't make a person intelligent. Intellegence needs to be there before the education or all you have is an educated dumb A $$ running around.

I don't agree that a lack of education is wholly the cause of ignorance. A lot can be said for life experience and the knowledge that comes from it. There are so many things that life experience teaches us that we can't get from books. Education in terms of college gives us an opportunity to focus our knowledge in a particular area. It also provides exposure to new ideas, points of view, and new ways of thinking and solving problems. An educated person can be ignorant about many things and well informed about others; and the same for an un-educated person.
As far as your example of Hitler, that can really be debated because he was able to manipulate science and biology to support everything he believed in; also his point of view was more about cultural and biological ideology, I don't think it had anything to do with a lack of education or ignorance.

Yeah, educated people can be racists; a friend of mine got a degree in Psychology and she said there were loads of racists in her program; they "didn't like immigrants". On the other hand, my boyfriend studied sociology, and practically nobody there had those kinds of issues. So it really depends on the type of education you're getting.
According to social psychologists, the only way to really get rid of racism and prejudice is to make sure everybody has the same rights and is treated equally under the law, everybody has the same economic and political opportuntities, and everybody has a chance to work and socialize together and work together for a common goal. Oh yeah, and authority figures like police officers, teachers, judges, and politicians need to enforce this norm.
Prejudice seeps in when these things are missing.

I slightly disagree with your definition: A good education and a lot of knowledge does not free someone from ignorance. I found in my work environment that Graduate entrants deemed themselves above the rest of the 'common man'. They may have had excellent educational qualifications but they totally lacked common sense or experience in life. They rapidly became excellent in theory but because of the rules of promotion, they got very little practical experience. It was frightening when they were eventually promoted and put in charge of certain situations. It was common for junior members to take over the practicals leaving the 'know-all' to do the paper work. The vast majority, with a few excellent exceptions, were ignorant, condescending and thought that the sun shone out of their a*rses...............

Of course educated people can be ignorant, in the true sense. It is a shame that the word "ignorance" has strayed from its real meaning. Look at politicians - many highly educated, lawyers and professionals, yet they are totally ignorant as to the plight of their regular, average constituents, such as the poor and marginalized.

Anyone can be ignorant, stupid, rude, educated or not. We need to really examine our lives and try to imitate Jesus in the way He was such a good teacher. He calmly sat down and talked with you and wanted to know about you and showed charitableness, and caring. How hard would it be to set down with a stranger and say "hello and how are you today. " Of course the conversatin might continue and you'd make a new friend or is that what society is really afraid of....
