I know it sounds like a lot, and it is considering what we had to learn in the first grade, but times have changed. I am a first grade teacher, and students are required to learn all the things listed above. Each state has standards that each grade level must learn to ensure the child is ready for the next grade. So, it is not the teacher giving too much work. The teacher is preparing your child for second grade. You should log onto your states board of education and look under standards. This will tell what your child is expected to learn in each grade level. If you need help finding the info, let me know. I would be happy to help, or list what state you are from and I will post it.

Actually this has been the norm for over a decade. Now, be calm. Children do not flunk 1st grade because they miss a few words. It takes a lot to flunk 1st grade. You have to understand the difference between a goal and an achievement. The teacher has set a goal. Goals are always above expectations. Set expectations high for all children and they will all reach high. But if your child doesn't quite make it, it is OK. Your child will be moved along as long as your child shows progress. If your child gives 100% (and only gets a 75% achievement), then the teacher will be happy.

It is always better to make a child rise to an expectation rather than make them believe that it is not possible. They are like sponges at that age and will learn whatever you give them if you approach it correctly as a challenge and not a chore.
If you are at all sharing that attitude with your child as in out loud complaining and disagreeing with the teachers expectations... Forget it, they will never rise to the occasion and excel.
Your bad... not the school, the teacher or your child.
My kids have to know all that... and I take them to Kumon too as extra curricular alternative means of learning two days a week with homework every night.
What is the alternative? extra hours doing nothing and playing Gameboy and or Gamecube?
Choose your battles...

If they're trying to teach BOTH Phonics AND Whole Word, it sounds like they are a little gun shy from having so many ppl telling them how bad schools have become. Now they're overcompensating. But like most overcompensators, they've gone too far the other way. They're idiots. Don't trust your kids to them. Take a serious look into home schooling.

That is isn't right sounds he should be learning and and saying words . He will get mad at you but it will pay off in the end your self . You can make flashcards for him and see if that works , He is on the right track. And be patient You can work with the afterschool programs and see what they suggest. - Good luck.

In general, public schools are not a good place for children. It's sounds that you're concerned, so you might want to check into homeschooling. It's like the lasagna I make - it comes out better that what I get in restaurants.

Never too much work! When he has his full scholarship to Harvard while everyone else that were learning the things you thought they should be learning aren't even getting accepted to college, you will have your answer.

This is normal. The teachers have degrees in this field and know what they are doing. If you are negative about it your child will pick up on it and not try as hard bc he thinks he doesnt have to.
