I'm planning to take a trip, but in order to time things right I'll have to take one airline going over and another airline going back. What kinds of problems will this create? Will I have to pay more for my ticket? Why do people usually take the same airline going both ways?

If the airlines are already codeshare partners on the routes you need, then it could be very simple. Otherwise, you're stuck with one-ways (or two roundtrips which you don't use the return portions), and one-ways can be quite expensive. What's your itinerary? Why do you need separate airlines? Post some more info and I'll watch this question and come back to it.

Once again, I went from British Airways ( at Gatwick) to Continental Airlines and my luggage did NOT get on my flight with me. I don't know if using 2 different airlines had anything to do with it, but...be advised.

I bought my airline ticket thru a travel agent and didn't have to pay any more or less than I would of with 2 one way tickets

There won't be any problems. However, you will probably pay more simply because you are purchasing 1-way tickets, which are more expensive as compared to half the cost of a round trip ticket.

This also should answer your question as to why? that and the possibility of frequent flyer miles.
