Tans it but in certain skin types it ages it, and remember Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, the cause, the sun.

There are two types of UV rays (A and B). One tans the skin, the other causes deep damage and mutations (skin cancer). Putting on SPF keep the tanning one UV rays out, but it lets the really bad rays in. That is likely the reason that even though nearly everyone is using SPF lotion these day, the cancer rate goes up. You are better off just spending a little less time in the sun (but we all do need some sun). Some companies are just starting to produce a block for the other UV rays. Still, spending an appropriate time in the sun is the best defense.

I know that the sun rays are very bad for the skin because, the sun rays burns through all 8 skin layers. The sun will also leave a freckle like spots on a body that are exposed to the sun on a daily basis. Just try to wear sun block. Also tanning in the tanning bed is not as bad for your skin as the sun rays are. The tanning bed only penetrates 3 layers of the skin. So if you want to be tan I would recommend the tanning bed.

there is two types of UV rays.. there is UV A and UV B.. UV A is considered to be fairly harmless, where UV B is the one that will cause skin cancer..
the sun emits both types..
large metal halide and sodium vapor light bulbs create both A and B but the lamp has a coating that filters out the B..
ultra violet light is used in industrialized nations to disinfect municiple drinking water by running the water past a UV bulb..

Bear in mind that skin darkens as you age anyway, and that long term sun-damage can permanently alter your skin tone (my grandfather, mother and sister have permanently reddish tanned skin due to continuous sun exposure). Stay out of the sun, always wear long pants and longs sleeves and avoid direct sunlight. Wear a high SPF sunscreen religiously on all exposed skin. Some locations have harsher sun than others (when I lived in the US I never tanned, here in Australia I really have to avoid the sun). I don't recommend using skin bleach or lemon juice on your skin, they are very abrasive and often don't work. I do however find that a face mask made of natural yoghurt and oatmeal (just mix the two together) makes my skin a bit fresher and lighter looking. Using oil (almond, olive) on your face and hands will help keep the skin soft and glowy. Avoid harsh soaps, but do exfoliate your skin regularly, a buildup of 'old' skin cells can make you look tired and sallow. And don't worry, darker skin is not bad. On men particularly it can look very attractive.
