I agree you should start with checking them out at the library. My trick growing up--go for books with nice covers--the ones with flowers, bouquets, landscapes, etc. on the cover instead of the half-naked couple. It's about half-and-half as to what is on the cover of romance books....so that would be a good starting place.

Hint: Julia Quinn is a great romance writer AND all of her covers are good and 'safe' looking.

You don't say your age - that would be helpful. If you are just truly reading "romantic" books, she would have nothing negative to say about them right? But if you are delving into softcore or erotica, that is not such a good idea. As long as you are living at home, your life should be an open book! (as in, totally open to be shown to anyone - I was just going further with the literary metaphor) You shouldn't be ashamed of what you are reading - if you are, that tells you there is something amiss!

Easy, rent romance books at the library, one at a time. Don't keep them in your drawers, if possible take them to school with you or where ever you go. The best advice would be not to keep it in your room but another part of your home. Maybe under the sofa, or in a place she doesn't check daily. Make sure you change up hiding places often, otherwise she will find them.

Well,
Your mom shouldn't be complaining about a teenager reading, because that is a miracle right there. Unless you are reading very graphic erotica, you should have a talk with her and tell her that you enjoy reading literature with a romantic feel to them. Maybe you should check out some teen chick lit like Meg Cabot? If you hide them, then she may feel that she can't trust you.
