Hiya,

My little brother needs a ethernet connection for his (aging) PC. I've seen USB-Ethernet adaptors which would be ideal (no need for him to open the box and fit an expansion card) but they are all USB 2.0 and his PC has just plain old original USB ports. Will this cause a problem?

Thanks!

Yuff!! Incompatibility of USB ports and USB has a high voltage that can fry a PC. GEt those ethernet cards much safer...

No problem, as someone else has said USB 2.0 is backward compatible to USB 1.1. Devices will just run at USB 1.1 speed. What I would say is that fitting a PCI 10/100 RJ45 Network interface card is simple and although you have to take the side panel off the tower, it is a neat and tidy solution. It would also give you the opportunity of vacuuming out the inside of the case. If the PC is old I'll guarantee there is a build up of dust around the fans and power supply etc. which will be causing excess heat and detracting from the performance of the PC in general. Don't you have enough wires hanging out of the back of the tower already, without adding a bulky external adapter.

I really can't see a problem , the external device with just work at USB 1.1 speeds though in this case it really would be easier to fit an ethernet card in his PC as they are (or can be) very cheap (eg: less than 5ukp).If he has USB ports he should have the requisite slots inside his pc and they're easy to fit (honest).

Every cell has DNA and it is consisted of two strands tightly woven around each other. The thing that prevents the two strands from breaking apart is called a telomeric cap (which is random nucleotide sequences called nonsense codons. Codon is a 3 sequence of nucleotides that codes for amino acids eg. CUU is a amino acid called proline . A nonsense codon is one that doesnt code for any amino acid production) Every time your cells divide a small sequence is lost there by reducing the stability of the cell's DNA (in layman's terms). This will eventually lead do most of Ur cells' DNA becoming unstable. And usually when a mistake occurs in DNA the cell will perform auto cytolysis (cell suicide) to prevent problems. So when you are old most of ur cells telomeric caps will be low and they are prone to die when they try to divide.. Whats really interesting about this theory is the impact it has on evolution (because this happens on both meiotic as well as mitotic divisions. which means that a species grows old too before it mutates.. but thats a different story)

There shouldn't be any problem most usb 2 devices are backward compatible with usb 1.1

It will be fine. If there was a power difference, the port wouldn't be the same would it... They wouldn't let that happen.

The device will just work a little slower.

USB1.0 is 11mbps... enough to surf the net with... Most internet connections are only 8mbps tops.

I think - could be wrong - that the USB2 will just turn itself down and run old USB.
