Logic and debate broke down into a mess, and Jefferson and (the little short guy-forget his name)___ recruited people to join them to endorse one side or the other. Eventually, it became more expedient to just start debating between the groups, rather than letting any Tom, Dick, or Harry jump into the debate and 'confuse' things.
End result is what we have today: the illusion that there are two sides when in reality there is only the side of Blind Faith in money vs. everyone else and Nature herself.
