Mary Higgins Clark has some wonderful suspense novels. I have read every one and have never been disappointed. My favorites are "Loves Music, Loves to Dance," "Stillwatch," and "A Cry in the Night." I am an avid mystery reader and "A Cry in the Night" had me so freaked out I stayed up all night reading it!
The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons are also quite interesting, pretty suspenseful, quick reads.
As far as inspirational books, a Purpose Driven Life is very good, as well as The Case for Christ!
Go to the bargain book tables of Barnes and Nobles or Borders. They have a ton of great hardback books at great prices (usually under $10). I have found some great mysteries on the bargain table.

The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
The Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans
The Redemption of Althalus by David & Leigh Eddings [fantasy / adventure]
One fine Day in the Middle of the Night by Christopher Brookmyre; humourous thriller
The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly
Split Second by David Baldacci
Last Man Standing by David Baldacci
From a Buick 8 by Stephen King
The Green Mile by Stephen King; if it's not a classic, it should be!
Rainfall by Barry Eisler
The Christmas Box Collection by Richard Paul Evans; three stories in one book which are also published separately ~
The Christmas Box / The Timepiece / The Letter
Each of these is a keeper for me and books that I have re-read at least once; so many books, so little time!

Have you tried VC Andrews (the early stuff before her death) or Nora Roberts/JD Robb? Try those. Carol Goodman has also done a few good mysteries, as well as Kat Martin if you like ghost story types.
The best thing to do is to search your favorite genres on Amazon.com. They not only give you the premise of the book, but offer many customer reviews as well. I always find it very helpful.

Dean R. Koontz is one of the best writers out there. He has written many books that have been best sellers. I would also recommend Michael Connolly and James Patterson. With these 3 authors you will be reading forever.

Hi there. I'm the author of a new medieval fantasy series that you might like. The title of the first episode is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If you are a fan of Conan, LOTR or Harry Potter books, this is one you'll enjoy. A Hollywood producer said it was, "Like Braveheart meets Lord of the Rings." (See other comments & reviews below.)
Good luck, whatever you decide to read!
Jon F. Baxley (Author, Editor, Ghostwriter and Proofreader)
THE SCYTHIAN STONE (eBook only)
THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY (eBook and hard cover)
THE REGENTS OF RHUM (coming fall '07)
Major Media Reviews:
Publishers Weekly
STARRED Review. A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages.
