Check out this web site for how phones work. The first phone had just the essentials - see below. The second link shows a diagram of how Alexander Graham Bell's first phone works.

the telephone was actually invented by an italian name antonio meucci, not alexander bell. that's a myth.

this is a US congress house resolution stating that the patent issued to bell was on the grounds of fraud by bell.

meucci is the true inventor.

It had a built in puppet show that would perform the The Last Temptation of Christ when you called locally and the bondage scene from Cats when you called outside of you local calling area. It was expensive, but when you called internationally, the puppets would perform the final scene from Annie in the language of the country you called...it was really quite advanced and made a huge splash at the Worlds Fair when it was introduced...

The first phone was had a cranking thingy on the side and you turned that a few times, spoke into the microphone thing, and listened into the ear phone. And you had to ask the operator to connect you with whomever you wished to speak.

an operator who placed every call
Community lines - a number of residences shared a line.
no dialer, click the reciever and the operator took your call.
no phone books
no long distance calling.
different rings for different residences on a shared line.
... ummm not that I would actually know about this stuff, though.

The first telephone did not have call waiting.

essentially you cranked a handle, and told the operater who you wanted to call. the one bell did - a crank that got him through to the kitchen where watson was waiting for the call to come in. so really there were 2 first phones.
