Coffin Coffee Table
Tired of that drab, ordinary coffee table in your living room? It just doesn't evoke the spirit of Halloween, does it? Well I turned my plain coffee table into a cool looking Coffin Coffee Table in about 15 minutes for a little bit of nothing. All it takes is a large piece of cardboard, a yardstick, utility knife, a pencil and the home haunter's friend, duct tape.
Here are the materials you'll need:
-cardboard (free if you can find it)
-yardstick
-pencil
-duct tape
-utility knife
This is a pic of our coffee table. It's oval shaped. I believe that this project would work best on a oval or rectangular shaped coffee table. Round or square coffee tables wouldn't work. You could also build a small table out of scrap wood if you happen to have a round or square coffee table and then just put your's away until after Halloween.
Turn your coffee table upside down. Trace around your coffee table with a pencil. Now take the yardstick and pencil and draw a coffin shape on the cardboard big enough that the outline of the coffee table fits completely inside the outline of the coffin.
Here is the coffee table on top of the coffin-shaped piece of carboard. I cut the cardboard outside on the sidewalk. (It's rough on utility knife blades but you need a flat space to spread the cardboard out to cut it.)
Cut out the sides from cardboard. Measure each edge of the coffin with the yardstick. I used pieces about 5" tall. Attach them to the coffin outline with good ol' duct tape.
Here is the completed "coffin" on top of the coffee table. You could now paint it black and be finished with it. I chose to leave mine "natural" and unpainted. I'm going to cover it with a white sheet. Nobody will notice what color it is.
This is the Coffin Coffee Table complete with the sheet. I'm going to add some blood splatters to the sheet with some red paint later. Pretty cool, huh? Only took about 15 minutes to make and it looks cool and didn't cost anything.

I understand the point Ms. Lynch is trying to make.. but I think she's fighting the wrong battle here. I've seen tons of decorations where skeletons are hanging from nooses, witches and bats and ghouls are all twisted, bloody, gory.. it's just part of the "Halloween" tradition.. something in our subconscious that makes light of death, to make it less scary in our real lives. I honestly don't think this neighbor should be singled out for a hate-crime.. overblown.. by far.. My biggest concern is that it will minimize true hate crimes and those perpetuated in real ways against real witches..and I just happen to be one.
