Asthma is an allergy and is triggered by something. The best non medication treatment for asthma is learning your triggers and avoiding them. Common triggers are smoke, dust, mold, mildew, plants, dust mites, pets and grass/weeds.

If you can not figure our your triggers, you may need to see an allergist and have allergy screening done. This may point out your triggers.

The National Asthma Prevention Program and the Expert Panel of Diagnosis and Management of Asthma both agree if you have to use a prescription inhaler such as albuterol more then two time per week, your asthma is NOT in control and you will need a prescription controller medication.

Controller medications are steroids (Asthmacort Asthmanex, Flovent, Pulmocort), Leukotriene modifier (Singulair, Aculade, Zyflo) or mast cell stabilizers (Cromolyn sodium, Intal, Tilade).

You may want to talk to your doctor about several strong controller medications and maybe Xolair shots.

I don't think it is a good idea for an asthmatic patient to be a firefighter because the smoke, carbon-monoxide and all sorts from burning houses can kind of induce asthma attack, choke or even cause the person his life! so, I don't think you can become a fire fighter if you have asthma.

Why not? Jackie Joyner-Kersee became a world class track and field athlete w/ asthma. The key is medication management and monitoring. Talk to your doctor.
PS -Tanya Harding also had wrestling and went from ice skating to wrestling, both physically demanding sports.

of course you can!! you have to follow your dreams!! i did. I'm a police officer in the los angeles area and I was born with no arms and no legs. once I finally made it over that wall on the obstacle course with a method I developed involving me doing a series of cartwheels and then at the last second launching myself off the ground using only my extraordinarily strong neck muscles, I knew there was no obstacle I couldn't overcome. although I'm considering retiring and becoming a motivational speaker.
