Formatting a drive makes it difficult for YOU to recover - but easy for someone who knows what they are doing. You need to use a disk wiping utility like the affore mentioned Darik's Boot and Nuke - this will REPEATEDLY write data randomly to the disk so that only the NSA - in 5 or 10 years - will have the ability to recover the data.

You cannot FORMAT C: from within Windows. - Windows knows it's the boot/system drive and won't let you!

One option is to create a boot disk. Check the Windows help for how to create one and then copy the file format.exe. Reboot with the floppy inserted and the comp will show you the prompt A:> usually. Type format C:\ and you will erase your hard disk. This is dangerous. Why do you want to format? You will erase everything including your operating system? Is this what you want? Better way is to reinstall the operating system. Insert the operating system (Windows 2000 and above) cd and reboot and follow the instructions. It will give you the option to repair or reinstall fresh. If you find it too complicated ask a comp tech to do it. They shouldnt charge more than Rs. 100/-

It appears that, ur OS (Windows) is installed on the same drive C. so it cannot format C dirve.

anyways, u can prepare a Boot disk & after booting the PC from that boot disk u may format ur C dirve.

alternatively, connect ur HDD to any other PC and format it. It'll work,

the only way to wipe the drive is by formattting it. if you are having problems doing that i suggest you take it to a computor store and spend a few bucks. if you dont go that route you risk doing more damage than a reboot will be able to resolve

Boot from the disk created and it will wipe your drive so completely that the NSA & CIA can't read anything from it.
