Let x be the number of popcorn tins sold. Then the number of nuts tins sold is 390 - x.

Since popcorn is $1.50/tin, and nuts is $2.00/tin, then you can make another equation representing the amount of money made.

$1.50x + $2.00(390 - x) = $655

Let x be the number of popcorn tins sold.
Let y be the number of nut tins sold.

Then x+y=390, because 390 tins were sold.

Also, 1.50x + 2y = 655, because of the price of each kind of tin and the fact that they made $655.

You can use elimination to solve these equations.

Double the first equation: 2x+2y=780.

Then subtract the second equation from it:

(2-1.5)x + (2-2)y = 780-655

or

0.5x = 125

so x=250. In other words, 250 popcorn tins were sold, and 140 tins of nuts were sold, because 390-250=140.

There are 2 equations...

for the number of tins: x + y = 390

for the $ made: 1.50x + 2.00y = 655, or 1.5x + 2y = 655

from the top equation, we can solve for one...
either y = 390-x
or x = 390-y

both work. Choose one, and substitute into the $ equation.
(I chose x = 390-y)

1.5(390-y) + 2y = 655, which reduces to...

585 - 1.5y + 2y = 655, which reduces to...

.5y = 70

solving for y... y = 140 (tins of nuts)

substituting into the Numbers equation...

x = 390 - 140

x = 250 (tins of popcorn)

Let, x = no. of pop-corn tins sold and y = no. of nuts tins sold.

So, the equations are:

x + y = 390
1.5x + 2y = 655

To slove the equations, we need to replace the value of x in equation 2 from equation 1:

from eqn 1, x = 390 - y

from eqn 2,
1.5 * (390 - y) + 2y = 655
585 - 1.5y + 2y = 655
0.5y = 70
y = 140

and, x = 390 - y = 390 - 140 = 250

so, 250 popcorn and 140 nuts cans have been sold.

x = # of popcorn tins sold
y = # of nuts tins sold

(#1) 1.5x + 2y = 655
(#2) x + y = 390

Rearrange (#2) to isolate y:

(#3) y = 390 - x

Plug (#3) into (#1):

1.5x + 2(390 - x) = 665

1.5x + 780 - 2x = 665
-.5x = -115 ------> x = 230

Since "x + y = 390," and "x = 230," then y = 160

x = No of tins of popcorn
y = No oftins of nuts

Equation showing money spent:
1.50 x + 2.00 y = 655
Equation showing no of tins sold:
