According to the World Factbook, aided with Aneki, and the Guinness World Records English is currently the 2nd most commonly spoken language in the world. The variations in the several subsets of english are not entirely dissimilar between American and British. The english language uses a lot of French words in their definitions and context.
Hope it answers your question.

My experience has been that "americanized" English is the most common in non-anglo countries simply because they learn it through personal contact, and there are more Americans than Brits. And to say that Chinese is the "most spoken" because there are more of them than us is incorrect. When you take into account the number of non-anglos (including Chinese!) that speak English as their second (or third) language, English is clearly the most spoken. If you are in Caracas, Stuttgart, Istanbul, or St. Petersburg, "Ni hao ma?" is going to get you a lot of blank stares, but "How are you?" is going to get you a lot of friendly smiles.

English is English, to break it up into American and British just begs for it to be broken further, such as southern US, Midwest US, New England, and never mind the whole Ebonics arguement.

That would depend entirely upon THE MEDIA and it's effects on the (foreign) culture. - In my international travels (I have spanned the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe and to Jamaica) I notice how the news media has an effect on the general public. As I communicated with the populous (over there) I noticed many "Americanisms"; phrases that are commonplace throughout certain regions repeated. Many such phrases are improperly used.
So... that depends upon who you contact overseas, their age and thier schooling / training.
