An alternator is an A/C generator. It produces A/C current which is converted to DC current with diodes.
Cars used to all have DC generators. They switched to alternators for 2 reasons: alternators charge better at low RPM's, and alternator brushes last longer since all they carry is a small field current. The entire output of a generator goes through the brushes.
The function of an alternator or a generator is to supply all of the car's electric needs, plus recharge the battery.
A car can run without an alternator or generator, but the battery will eventually go dead.
A car without electronic fuel injection can go quite a while with a bad alternator: a hundred miles or more if you have no electric stuff turned on. Many race cars have a "total loss" electric system to get rid of the drag of the alternator.
Electronic fuel injection can make it much less far, mostly because of the electric fuel pump. No car can go very far at night with the lights on!

From 20 pounds for a used item from a breakers' yard, to 300 pounds plus fitting, for a brand-new high output item you need fitting. You didn't tell us much about your car, at all! Try ebay. Key in "Ford Focus Alternator" or whatever your car is - make sure you find one which matches your car, completely.

An alternator simply draws a small amount of energy from the battery which it uses to power the eletrical systems in a vechical. In return it also replaces the power used. That is why you can operate a vechical with a bad battery as long as the alternater is good or a bad alternator with a good battery.

i own a repair shop,,and the basic job of the alternator is to put back the juice it takes to start the car,and to assist the battery in keeping up the needed amount of voltage and amperage to operate all the vehicles accessories as well as keep te battery up to a full charge, really the alternator plays a big roll in how the car will run,and perform,if there is a lack of voltage from either the battery or the alternator the voltage supply to all the accessories will be robbed of needed power to function properly,,good luck i hope this help,s.

it keeps your batteries charged, many people fail to look at the belts on the alternator for wear, cracks and fraying. When you see cars going down the road at night and the lights are extremely dim good chance they need a new alternator or the belts are bad.

It generates power for all of your accessories such as lights, radio, power windows/locks etc. You might be thinking the battery does this but really all the battery does is provide the spark to start your car.
