what kind of instrument does the pilot need to help him fly the plane through thick clouds?

He is usually less than 50 miles the airport when he is flying through clouds and never for more than a couple of minutes. He is in contact with the control tower and air traffic control. They tell him the exact flight pattern to follow and he must follow it to the letter. I believe they also have radar in the cockpit.
