You need to allow them to climb for a breath of air every now and then. Go to a hardware store and buy plastic egg crate (used to diffuse/cove florescent lights. It is lightweight, inexpensive and can easily be cut-out for filters and hoses. Just make certain that your light won't melt it.

with a fiddler crab, they only need shallow water (maybe half a centimeter), so if you drain the water, you won't need a pump. or you could put some kind of blocker like a bug screen on top.
