Hold a mirror up to their nose and mouth... if you don't see anything and they feel cold to the touch. Chances are they are caput! Make arrangements before it starts to stink!

Check for no respiration's, no pulse. Color is very pale (in whites) or ashy (in blacks). I am a hospice nurse and what I actually say is "without vital signs" when I report to the medical examiner.

A person is not alive anymore once they've given up on life. You don't have to be dead to be 'not alive'.

Checking for a pulse or resperation is pretty definitive. For an acid test, if you cut them and they don't bleed, their heart has been stopped long enough to gaurantee brain death. I hope this is helpful to you.
