Originally it was a blue serge cloth mad in the French town of Nimes. Thus that particular cloth was known a 'serge de Nimes' or, in English, serge from the town of Nimes. Soon the 'serge' part was dropped leaving 'de Nimes'. In French the 's' is silent so it sounded like denime or 'denim' as it became coloquialised. Many cheap workclothes were made from this cloth including trousers (jeans) and jackets and, sometimes, shirts. Denim today is seen as very fashionable even though it is still the same cheap, tawdry cloth that it ever was but, unfortunately, because people follow fashion and wear what they are told, they pay prices far in excess of what the garment costs to make hence the vast profits made by companies like Levi. In England I used to sell Levis for about £30 a pair which I bought wholesale at £1.50 a pair so imagine the vast profits available.

The cloth itself, who knows?
Interesting story about Levis...
The original blue jeans had a rivet at the crotch where all four sections met. This proved to be an inconvenience of a sort for cowboys who, when hunkered down at the fire, would get the rivet heated up to the point of it burning against their skin in a very sensitive spot! After due consideration, the Levi Strauss company removed the crotch rivet.

From Neims in France. (De Neims). An immigrant tailor arrived in America with some of his native cloth and saw that the workers, especially miners were wearing out their trousers too quickly so he made some from the material he had brought from France - and so the Demin trousers/jeans was invented.
