I am doing a history paper and I want to write about hippies. The theme of the paper is 'Triumph and Tragedy'. And I want to talk about what they did/their movement and how that was both a triumph and tragedy. So..was there anything major they were involved with?

Peace (Viet Nam), love (sex), drugs (ok, or not ok). See Woodstock.

For Viet Nam, there was both good and bad, good for the protests, and bad for handing our guys bags of dog crap when they came home. Music really came into focus more also, with very different styles. Drugs were always around but, seemed to become more widespread with the hippies. Free love was available too, with no strings attached. There were some bombings on laboratories that did animal testing I believe too. Good luck!

Unfortunately the hippie movement was overshadowed by use of drugs and that is what brought it down. The social goals of sharing and communion eventually fell into drug use and addiction for hippies.
