There were guerrilla tactics used by the Americans in the Revolutionary War, and the Viet Cong used this sort of warfare as well.
Both were struggles for independence.
And neither war was popular at home--the British back across the Atlantic weren't any more excited about their sons getting killed in a place half a world away than many Americans were in the 1960's.

In the A.R.W. the colonists were fighting for their freedom from foreign domination, in the Vietnam war, the Vietnamese were fighting for the same thing.

as i recall, both of them were undeclared wars.. they were considered "military actions"..
another similarity is that in both conflicts there was guerrilla warfare used.. the colonists changed tactics from the accepted style of battle where the armies marched at each other in formation.. they used covert locations to skirmish with the brits and their allies, the hessians..
the vietnam conflict was pretty much entirely a war fought in this guerilla style of battle..
another similarity, is that the french were our allies in both conflicts..
