They began as 100 blue, shirtles men in tights frolicking in the forest. When they first got a female, she had been created by their arch nemisis Gargamel, and was evil and intent on destroying them all until Papa smurf fixed her. The second female, Sassette, was the same way. Then they introduced Granny smurf, who came into being before the show began, so we don't actually know what her origin was. By the end of the series, the men numbered 105 (if you count the robot smurf, Clockwork) and only 3 females. Another interesting note is that the second girl was made so that Smurfette had female companionship, because she needed another girl to talk to.

Man I don't think they were gay or sexist. But I can tell you why they were Blue...
You would be blue too if there was only one female...
(Take into consideration of the age of the other two female smurfs, and you are left with one)...
I'm blue da ba de da ba die...
P.S. It's a freakn' kids show back in the freakn' 80's everybody was on drugs!

The smurfs were definitley gay as in the scandinavian film "Smurf on Smurf" which although two females were featured it was only with each other making tea,in the backround to much male smurf action. Look at these facts:
1 They are all blue
2 Where do you think the "Village People" stole the idea.
3 They love running around in white bottoms exposing their manly chests

No, they were just Communists. There are huge theories about the smurfs and Communism, there's even a page about it on Wikipedia. As how that ties in with the gender issues, Communism places a huge emphasis on male-female roles.

Well, they are cartoon characters. I guess the question should be looking at the aims of their creator. Peyo created a number of other characters. You can see some of them here: http://www.smurf.com/infos/biblio.html
Possibly Peyo had no purpose in making all of his characters male to being with. Possibly the presence of so many mushrooms in the cartoons is a clue to the author's state of mind? Who knows?
