There are so many to choose from. The dog certainly. But what about the buffalo who helped the Native Americans to survive by providing meat, clothing, and tools. What about the animals we as humans consume, like cow, pig, poultry and so on. The deer, who provide beauty to the earth, as well as food. What about the domestic cat, who provide comfort and company, and some, like dogs, have saved human and pet lives from eminent danger. I just can't pick one best friend. Many seem to deserve that title.
