Suppose your average percentage on these WeBWorK homeworks is P percent. You wish to obtain a grade in this class that requires you to obtain at least Q percent overall. What is the the minimum average percentage your need to obtain on the exams. Your answer should of course depend on P and Q.

Do all the homeworks and exams have the same number of points, or put another way, the same weight on the final grade? Usually, either the exams have more points, i.e. 500 points possible on the exams, 300 points possible on the homeworks, or the number of the points are the same but exams are weighted as 3/5s of you grade while homeworks only are weighted 2/5s.

Assuming the weights and number of points are the same, it would seem to be as simple as saying that E is the exam percentage, P is the homework percentage and Q is the overall percentage.

If you want to get at least Q overall,

(P+E)/2 >= Q
P+E >= 2*Q
E >= 2*Q - P

Let m be the number of homeworks so far. Let n be the number of assignments remaining. Assume all of the assignments have the same weight.

You need your overall score to be Q(m+n), and you have Pm so far. Therefore you still need (Q-P)m+Qn points, spread over n assignments, so your average score per assignment needs to be (Q-P)(m/n) + Q. So, the more assignments you've done (or fewer you have remaining), the harder it is to get the percentage you want.
