The historic are with it's central shopping and strolling is fine. The walk in and aound the lake is great. The pubs rining the outside of the historic district are great at night.

Outside hamburg there is Bremen, a very charming town with a reconstructed medievel section with tons of great restaurants and an historic tour. The blue horse pub is fun to hang out at at night. More charming and less busy than hamburg, but very close.

Once every few weeks on a Sunday morning there is a Fischmarkt in Hamburg. It is down near the docks and is a big fleamarket/fish market. It was one of the more interesting things I've seen. The main part is just like a fleamarket anywhere; cheap things to be hawked. But the fish section was neat to me, as the guys were yelling back and forth about the quality of the other's fish. It has been 10 years, but I still remember that. If it is in town at the time you are there, definately try to check it out.
