I'm 25, and I don't bother to listen to much rap music. It's the same stuff all the time. I get fed up with hearing meaningless, noninspirational material.

I admit there are a few (very few) who rap on social/political and even spiritual matters, but they can do this in a way that makes their music listenable to those who don't want to hear trashy lyrics. I'd like to see more rappers breakthrough in a positive way in hip hop.

I believe that people sing, talk, and rap about what they know. A great deal of the rappers that are out on the market today were raised in the "ghettos" on American culture.

They talk about shootings, fighting, getting pregnant, going to jail... etc. It is also a way of life for many rappers.

The beat and rhythm of rap music is so intense that it is difficult to talk about how wonderful life is, with the dark undertone of the background!

The only "positive" message out there is about their bling and diamonds... it shows that those individuals have gotten out of their past and made some serious money!

There are more and more ways for artists to connect with their audience these days, be it mix tapes or MySpace. But the mass market rap doesn't really reflect this. I'm guessing that you'd like to find rap music with better subject matter, or you wouldn't bother asking the question. I'd suggest doing a search on indie rap. Some people find Common's work uplifting (I find it boring), and some like Christian Rap (e.g., Kirk Franklin). A dedicated search will be worth it!

I agree with you straight up. I'm a rap artist, and listener myself, and all I hear now-a-days is bullsh!t on the radio, and mad artists talking about the same ole sh!t like how their chains hang low, and being icy, and pimping, and popping trunks, and how their care looks like peanut butter & jelly... I think it shows how ignorant these new artists are today. I mean there's still some artists that actually put some thought into their lyrics, but like jadakiss said, rapper's lie in 90% of their rhymes

Hip/Hop is cultural music that derived from the teenagers and was transformed into music by expressing their life and society as a whole. It was quickly taken up by major recording labels as a fast growing trend $$$$$$$$$$and after 40 years it is still the number one selling music on the market.,..so go figure!!

I agree. But, its like country music, woe is me, my wife left me, I'm drinkin kinda thing. The beat in Rap is awesome for dancing, but........to hear the artist, just,...mouth off and talk a story,.........is so old and worn out. But, if you think about it, .....unfortunately,...the pop genre is soooooooooo lollipopish, yawn, she's/he's not even singing it, voiced over,....I've got money to make this CD crap is pathetic as well. I guess, its just channel surfing or buy the stuff you want to hear.

1st of all its ENTERTAINMENT sweetie. Its not for all people its for those who like listening to it.And now-a-days its not really the lyrics that count its the beat all the way.I personally don't like rap and i tend to make fun of it, and feel that there are plenty conscious rappers out here that deserves the acknowledgment many untalented rappers get.And basically rappers are running out of ideas that's just it.Their creativity is on 'E'.Rap is not the # one selling music in the market.WHY? because many people refuse to buy rappers music they bootleg it instead.Although i don't listen to it Country is the number one selling music. Why do you think they have more country radio stations?

Now, I'm just a whitegirl mommy, but I like some of it...NOT one group, NOT the whole genre, but some of it is inspiring to me - or better yet, reaffirms my stance on things. I don't keep my CD cases, so I can't tell you what...But I do. It's country that makes me want to blow my head off.

They figure that since it is selling that they don't need to change anything. I'm with you though, it is really stagnant right now.
