House Approves Power for Warrantless Wiretaps

By ERIC LICHTBLAU

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 — The House voted on Thursday to give the president the formal power to order wiretaps on Americans without a court order for 90 days, even as a federal judge in Detroit once again declared the administration’s program of wiretapping without warrants to be illegal.

The House approved the surveillance measure, 232 to 191, after rejecting efforts by Democrats and some Republicans to impose greater restrictions on the wiretapping authority.

Anyone who would give up their liberty for security will have neither.

it's amazing to me how many people think this is just about tapping a few phone calls between Al Qaeda and the US. if that's all the president wanted to do, he'd have gotten warrants for the tapping under the previous law. Wake up! This is about compiling massive data bases on all of us, AND eavesdropping on any conversations they feel like. The president violates the law for several years, then has the law changed to immunize the government from prosecution. It's the same with the detainee legislation -- the government has violated the War Crimes Act, over and over when it's tortured prisoners, so Bush pushes a law through retroactively immunizing himself and others from prosecution for war crimes. This is only about taking away our freedoms to solidify their power and make themselves above the law. These laws do not protect us from terrorism, they make living in the US more like living under a 3rd world dictatorship or communist regime..

It's both wrong and unconstitutional.

Congress can't change either of these facts by passing a law.

But then we are currently run by the most Anti-American people EVER, aren't we?

If someone in the United States is making secret phone calls to Al-Qaeda, I believe they have the constitutional right to have their head blown off.

I think we are as common people losing America to a totalitarian dictatorship and it is scary that half of the population is allowing this to happen.

Wire tapping isn't right. People need their privacy. They don't need the president to know what they are saying to each other.
