I think you're right about the sex - chemicals are produced in your body that make you feel bonded to that person. That's evolutionarily helpful, so parents stick together long enough to raise their babies. However, when sex occurs outside the setting for creating children, the bonding feelings still arise. This can be great or terrible and should help people choose when and with whom to have sex with.

There are tried and trued ways to stop thinking about something. First thing - set an appt with yourself to think about him and keep it. Seriously, sit in a chair and do nothing but think about him for half and hour. Set a timer and move on when you're time is up. Thereafter, each time in a day when you find yourself thinking about him, you tell yourself - i have an appt to do this later and push the thoughts away - even if you have to start saying a nursery rhyme or other thing you plan in advance to shift your attention.
The second commonly used method is WORK. Hard physical work. Garden, help parents clean out the garage, scrub some bathrooms.
A third method is creativity. Start making something, creating something. Try not to start off with art revering him!
A fourth method is to volunteer - get out in the world and help people who are desparate for your energy, smarts, compassion.
A fifth method is to read some great books, transport yourself to other worlds. The Red Tent is an amazing book about the lives and struggles of women.

Find things to do with your time. Fill every minute of your day with things to do and distract you from thinking about him. Everything will be okay. What is hard today will get better with time.

Do not fantasize or obsess - don't imagine how things would be like and day dream. Stay grounded. Live in the moment . Stay real.

What will be will be.

Best of luck.

There is an old saying about time healing old wounds. You will get over him eventually. The quickest way is to go out and find someone who will treat you right.
