Around 9/11/2001 Saudi Arabia had over $600 million dollars invested in the United States (see:http://www.saudi-us-relations.org/newsletter2005/saudi-relations-interest-01-31.html ). I would not be suprised if that number were higher now and if it isn't I would say it amounts to nearly 2% of all the wealth in the US stock market. I would assume they have a similar position in the UK. Its a lot of money - but it doesn't have them cornering the market.

The USA is the most solid of the world economies and the UK's exchange in London is one of the most diversified exchanges in the world (as far as choices of MNC - multinational corp's equities to invest in is concerned). That is the why because they want to diversify their financial power and probably a bit of their political power throughout the world.

I don't know how much but I think I know why. What natural resources does Saudi have? Sea, sand and oil. The strict religious cusoms limit the opportunities for a holiday trade because there is not much chance of drinking, parties, night clubs, sunbathing etc so that leaves oil.

Oil makes a fortune for Saudi now but it will eventually run out and when it does the Saudi's will have to live off their accumulated wealth and that will have to be in countires that are still worth more than just sea and sand.

The "why" is easy. The US economy is the largest in the world and western countries are arguably lower risk investments. If you have huge amounts of money to invest, you want to put the money where there is the largest expected returns. You also want to diversify you're accounts, so while Saudis may invest a large amount in there own country they have more than enough to diversify into western markets.
