OK, I know I'm dumb, but why are all the flags at half-mast today? (Sunday, 10/1) Who died?

Well it depends on where you are talking about. I do know that 4 police officers lost their lives this past Thursday. Two state troopers in Ohio, one sheriff in Florida and one officer in another state all on Thursday. Some places will keep the flags at half mast till the officer is buried. I also know today that at least one military man lost his life in the war. I do know that was big news. I think he had some kind of crash in a military vehicle.
