Go to http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ and search their history for hurricane naming conventions. Yes, names are female & male. I believe female names were added in the 1953.

Hurricanes with female names are milder than the ones with male names.

Well, they go by the alphabeth giving a name to the hurracain based on the letter that follows next.
For example if the first huracaine of the season it's called Ana starting with an A the next one will be called Ben (hurracain B of the current season) and so on....
