The American colonies were put in place to provide Britain with a source of cheap goods. If we didn't send them tobacco or cotton, they'd have to find a more expensive source. The American colonists were making a point that we could do without Britain but not vice versa. By the way, we banned imports as well. Kind of hurt us as we loved tea. Majorly hurt Britain as they were counting on sales to us to finance their multiple wars.
