I've used two purple eyeliners that last pretty long, don't drag on the eyes, don't smudge when I want them to and likewise stay when I want them to - by purple, I mean a dark aubergine/eggplant, mixed with a bit of brown - MAC's Permaplum is great for this.
The other eyeliner is a slightly more glittery purple, but mixed with brown-grey, and that's Stila's convertible eye color in Stone.
Neither of these are disco-effect, and blend well with either browns, purples, plums, greys, and silvers. You can see that's a fair bit of range for a purple/plum eyeliner. Quite multi-purpose actually! Good for the day time and just draw on stronger (and more smudging) for night time.
Don't forget before buying, to ask makeup artists at any brand that you shop for (if you're shopping counter brands) to give you a demo so you can see for yourself whether the products are easy to use and/or suit your skintone.

You can't go wrong with MAC. Their line of cosmetics work great, have a variety of colors, and stay put.
I use their wet/dry eyeshadows as eyeliner most of the time. It was tricky at first, but the make-up artists can give you tips on how to do it.

I like Lancome liquid eyeliner. They have lots of cool colors. Easy to put on, stays on really well.
MAC is really good too.
