Obviously, fastest cpu but most of the best cpus are designed as multi-core and unfortunately my software is designed for single-core. So, the software uses only 5% of the cpu and ram. Which cpu I should buy to get fast processing?

Sorry fellas, you are both wrong. Brand name DOES make a difference depending on what you are doing and we have enough information to give educated advice. Intel is best for multi-tasking and AMD is best for single function... hands down. For single threaded software... buy AMD. Careful though, AMD is leading the market in 64 bit technology... but your motherboard may not support it and your software may not run on it. Remember to do your research. Intel and AMD will not run on the same motherboard.

It's probably safe to say that if the application is the only thing running on the computer, then a single threaded application can't take advantage of dual core, or Hyperthreading. So in that case, it beomes a pure single cpu MIPS question. With that said, if the application is floating point computation intensive, then a processor with fast floating point performance could out run an otherwise faster processor. It really all depends on the application, and you haven't provided enough detail to adequately answer the question.
