Brooms do not take kindly to insecticides- so, you could try a soapy solution sprayed over the whole plant.

Pyrethrum spray. This is an insecticide that has been used effectively to control insects for decades. It is non-persistent, decomposing rapidly in the environment and if you use it on crops you can pick them within a couple days from spraying. These qualities make it an excellent choice for the control of garden and agricultural pests. The plant used for the production of the insecticide is Tanacetum cinerariaefolium a member of the chrysanthemum plant family.
